A 28-year-old woman's night out at Marquee in Marina Bay Sands (MBS) on Nov. 16 took an unexpected turn when she was allegedly physically assaulted on the dance floor by a man.

She was allegedly told subsequently that the man could not be identified.

She also claimed that a security guard apparently commented that she should have been able to defend herself, which added to her sense of helplessness.

She then turned to social media to enlist the public's help in identifying the man, as well as seek recourse.

Dancing

In a Dec. 2 Instagram post, the woman, Amelia, shared about the incident in a bid to crowdsource information on her alleged attacker.

According to her, she and her friends were dancing on a podium near "Table 27", which was by the dance floor.

The man was seen at another table located diagonally across from hers.

Out of the blue, he allegedly began to behave in an aggressive manner towards the woman and her peers.

He apparently used his body to push them by pretending to be "dancing", Amelia wrote.

His actions caused them to almost fall over, she also claimed.

The man was allegedly then warned by security and a Marquee staff, who witnessed the incident.

Amelia's group told the staff that they were fine and moved to the corner of the podium to avoid further escalating the situation.

The woman told Mothership that there was no prior argument or altercation, and the man had confronted the women "unprovoked".

Escalation

Moments later, the man allegedly started waving his hands "very close" to the women's faces, prompting Amelia to push his hands away.

In reaction, the man allegedly turned towards Amelia and began kicking her in the chest, causing her to fall.

While she was on the ground, he continued kicking and hitting her in the abdomen, she recounted.

The man was eventually removed from the premises by Marquee staff.

In a clip shared by Amelia, the man could apparently be seen in the corner of the frame during the alleged assault.

Another showed the man being escorted away.

He appeared to be stumbling as they made their way out of the dance floor.

Man gone when they went outside

When Amelia and her group went out of the club, the man was already gone.

Her group attempted to gather information from the man's friends.

They later called the police, who arrived and took statements.

The incident left Amelia with bruises on her body.

Could not identify man

Amelia shared that when she was outside the club, she apparently overheard a security guard commenting that she should have been able to defend herself, which added to her sense of helplessness in the moment.

She also claimed that she was told the police were not taking further action.

As a result, she was at a loss as to what her next course of action should be.

She and her friends eventually got in touch with people in the group who were seen with the man, but they claimed that they did not know the alleged assailant.

"I would have hoped for better measures to be put in place. For instance, for Marquee to have taken down the perpetrator's contact details before letting him off," Amelia commented.

"Beyond the physical bruises, the emotional impact has been far deeper and lasting," she wrote.

Her post has garnered over 380 comments and close to 1,500 reposts, with many expressing shock and disappointment at the turn of events.

Police statement

A Singapore Police Force (SPF) spokesperson told Mothership said that they received a call for assistance at 2:35am on Nov. 16 at 1 Bayfront Avenue.

"A 28-year-old woman sustained minor injuries but refused conveyance to the hospital," SPF said.

Police investigations are ongoing.

Amelia said she went to Tan Tock Seng Hospital on her own accord to have her injuries assessed.

A Marquee spokesperson confirmed with Mothership that an incident occurred at the nightclub on Nov. 16 involving an altercation between two guests.

“We are cooperating fully with the police in their ongoing investigation,” the spokesperson added.
