Pritam Singh case outcome has 'implications' for WP's Sylvia Lim & Faisal Manap: Indranee Rajah
Will be discussed at next Parliament sitting.
The court judgment in the case against Workers' Party (WP) Chief Pritam Singh has implications for WP Chair Sylvia Lim and Vice-Chair Faisal Manap, Leader of the House Indranee Rajah said on Dec. 22.
These will be discussed at the next parliamentary sitting in January 2026.
Indranee's comment was made in response to a follow-up media query about her Dec. 17 statement, in which she said that the outcome of Pritam's trial will be tabled for discussion in Parliament.
Lim and Faisal denied that Raeesah told to hide untruth: Indranee
Explaining her comment, Indranee referenced several findings from the Committee of Privileges (COP) Report to Parliament published on Feb. 10, 2022.
First, she noted that it found Pritam had lied to the COP, and since then, he had been convicted by the court.
Second, she noted that Faisal had refused to answer the COP's queries, was subsequently referred to the public prosecutor for possible contempt of Parliament, and was issued a police advisory after investigations.
Third, Indranee pointed out that the COP found that both Lim and Faisal had lied under oath when they denied that former WP Member of Parliament Raeesah Khan was told to "hide her untruth" during an August 2021 meeting.
"The COP's findings have been borne out by the court judgements," Indranee said.
"The COP was of the view that if Mr Singh, Ms Lim and Mr Faisal had guided Ms Khan to repeat her lie in Parliament, then such conduct would be unbecoming of a parliamentarian, and would amount to contempt of Parliament," she continued.
Indranee said that the three WP MPs previously disputed the COP Report findings, and Parliament had postponed making a decision on the matter until the outcome of Singh's case.
"Mr Singh’s case has now concluded, and he has been found guilty of lying under oath. The Court judgments therefore have implications for both Ms Lim and Mr Faisal," the Leader of the House explained.
Background
Indranee said in her Dec. 17 statement that the court's findings in Pritam's case served as a "solemn reminder" to all MPs to uphold the rule of law and maintain honesty and integrity in conduct.
It was necessary for parliament to take notice of Pritam's actions and the trial outcome and deliberate on an appropriate response, she shared.
In response, the WP confirmed that internal party processes have been initiated in light of the Dec. 4 High Court judgement, which upheld Pritam's convictions.
It also said that the party will give updates on the matter in due course.
