Man, 26, to be charged with making false terrorist threat at Bukit Timah church
He is believed to have acted alone, and there is currently no evidence to suggest that it was a religiously motivated attack or an act of terror.
A 26-year-old man was arrested after a suspicious item was found at St Joseph's Church in Bukit Timah on Dec. 21.
According to an update by the Singapore police on Sunday, Kokulananthan Mohan, who is a volunteer with the church, had discovered a suspicious item in a drain within the church premises.
For making a false terrorist threat, he will be charged on Dec. 22 under the United Nations (Anti-terrorism Measures) Regulations.
Background
Preliminary investigations suggest that the man had allegedly staged the incident by placing a self-fabricated item which resembled an improvised explosive device within the church premises.
According to the police, the item, which resembled an improvised explosive device, turned out to be three cardboard rolls and wires taped with black tape and with no explosive elements present.
He is believed to have acted alone, and there is currently no evidence to suggest that it was a religiously motivated attack or an act of terror.
An application will be made to have him remanded for psychiatric evaluation.
The offence carries a penalty of up to 10 years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to S$500,000, or both.
