Suspicious item at St Joseph's Church actually cardboard rolls & taped wires, church volunteer, 26, arrested

No explosive elements present.

A 26-year-old man has been arrested after a suspicious item was found at St Joseph's Church in Bukit Timah on Dec. 21.

According to a final update by the Singapore police, the man who is a volunteer with the church, had discovered a suspicious item in a drain within the church premises.

He then "immobilised" himself and held onto the suspicious item.

According to the police, the item, which resembled an improvised explosive device, turned out to be three cardboard rolls and wires taped with black tape and with no explosive elements present.

The police subsequently removed the item from the scene.

The man was arrested under Regulation 8(2)(a) of the United Nations (Anti-terrorism Measures) Regulations for his suspected involvement in the incident.

Police investigations are ongoing.

The church remains closed for service until tomorrow (Dec. 22).
