I ate Subway’s Meatball Supreme Marinara for the 1st time & discovered why my colleagues go crazy for it
Tis’ the season for Marinara mania.
The moment word spread that Subway’s iconic Meatball Marinara sub was officially making a comeback for a limited time only and that we’d get the chance to try them, the office descended into absolute chaos.
Colleagues were sprinting to the pantry, while others even claimed miraculous recoveries from illnesses and were suddenly well enough to “drop by the office”.
All for a bite of that long-lost juicy, juicy sub.
I must confess, I have only ever been vaguely aware of the sub and had never eaten one.
After all, it’s just a sandwich right? So I thought.
I was wrong.
I soon learnt that the Marinara sub wasn’t merely food to some people. It was their go-to comfort meal during their bright-eyed student years, before adulthood, deadlines, rising prices and housing woes became a thing.
“I had it almost three times a week in Secondary School,” said one colleague.
“I ate it every Saturday in JC,” chimed in another.
So when it disappeared from the menu, hearts were broken. Dramatically so.
The Marinara is back with a new companion
But dry your tears, Marinara mourners.
Because by popular demand, the much-beloved sub returns as Meatball Supreme Marinara! Just in time for the festive season and ready to offer a comforting wave of nostalgia strong enough to resurrect your inner bright-eyed child.
And this time, it comes with a brand-new companion: the all-new Chicken Marinara, perfect for those who want a refreshing twist.
OG fans and newbies alike can now celebrate the season of Marinara mania.
People who yearn are people who earn
When I announced to the office that the Meatball Supreme Marinara and Chicken Marinara were finally plated and ready, people descended upon the table like starved vultures who had been waiting their whole lives for this moment.
First was the OG, the legend, the one and only.
Those who managed to fight their way to the front took one bite and immediately went glassy-eyed, like they’d just reunited with a long-lost love.
Nadya (left), Wen-en (right), people at the back (staring jealously)
“It’s so good. I’m making sure to savour it at a rate of three bites per meatball,” Wen-en declared.
Nadya added that it might be even better now than when she had it in JC.
Swarn, who said the quality of his life had “significantly diminished” when the Marinara disappeared, took a bite and whispered:
“I can see the light in the tunnel.”
As a Marinara first-timer, I appointed myself part of the control group alongside Gracia.
Gracia ate hers with clinical precision before pronouncing, “The sauce is very savoury. This will fill up any hungry person.”
This, coming from someone as serious as Gracia, was akin to a person declaring from the rooftop that the Marinara had not only saved their family from hardship but also brought meaning back into their lives.
Then it was my turn.
The marinara sauce hit first, bursting across my palate — tangy, rich, and unapologetically bold.
It reminded me of a spaghetti bolognese condensed into a convenient, handheld form.
The meatballs were tender and juicy, pairing perfectly with the milky melted mozzarella.
Add the beef pepperoni, which gives a contrasting texture and a little savoury lift, and the whole thing becomes a hearty and comforting sub.
It looks simple. It sounds simple.
But that’s precisely why it works.
More complex does not always mean better. In fact, the beauty of the Meatball Supreme Marinara is how its humble ingredients come together to produce a flavour profile that is comforting and deeply satisfying.
Am I a new convert?
Well, let’s just say I found myself craving it while working from home. The next thing I knew, as if I had temporarily blacked out, a Meatball Supreme Marinara was magically sitting in my food delivery cart.
So yes, yes I was.
Chicken Marinara – original with a twist
The Chicken Marinara is for anyone who prefers a chicken-based option, or for OG fans who want the familiar marinara goodness with a different twist.
Instead of meatballs, this sub uses roasted chicken breast, paired with Old English-style cheese for a slightly creamier, more rounded flavour.
Rei, an OG Marinara loyalist trying the chicken version for the first time, found herself surprised.
“Honestly? I think I might have just found a new favourite.”
She added that it was a flavour that she would definitely end up craving.
Jin, who had never in his life eaten ANY Subway sandwich, chose the Chicken Marinara as his debut.
“The chicken is tender. You know how chicken can be dry AF? This one isn’t.”
As someone who usually avoids chicken because of past traumatic encounters with dry, sad poultry, I wholeheartedly agreed.
The chicken breast was soft, the Old English-style cheese added creaminess, and the veggies brought a crisp crunch that balanced the sauce nicely.
While I would personally gravitate toward the OG Meatball Sub (as a new convert), the Chicken Marinara is definitely something I’d reach for when I want something a little lighter and a little greener, yet still satisfying.
