An Airbnb owner in Malaysia suffered losses which may amount to RM4,500 (S$1,423) after she said her Singaporean guest suffered food poisoning from eating Bak Kut Teh and vomited in the apartment.

However, a friend of the man says this was probably a miscommunication, and that the man in question had been suffering from high fever and stomach flu for days before the incident, and had not consumed Bak Kut Teh prior to the incident.

The owner, Yu, told China Press that almost 80 per cent of the single-room apartment he rented was damaged, adding that the condition of the apartment was "horrific".

Damage

This is because, according to Yu, most of the furniture was covered in vomit.

As a result, she had to clean and disinfect the entire apartment, China Press reported, adding that Yu might have to replace the damaged furniture.

Did not check out

This comes after the Singaporean man checked in on Dec. 15 and was expected to check out at 12 pm on Dec. 21.

Yu, who estimated the man's age to be under 30, said she opened his room door at 5 pm on Dec. 21 with the help of a security guard and cleaner after she did not receive a notice from the man to check out.

In addition, her calls to him went unanswered, and he had not put his key back in the mailbox.

Vomit

Yu found the man unconscious on the sofa.

"However, there was no smell of alcohol or any bottles of alcohol at the scene," she added.

Yu said everyone was so frightened by the scene that they did not dare to step inside, instead they tried to wake the man up by shouting from outside.

He did not respond.

After Yu confirmed that the man was still breathing, she immediately called the police.

Ambulance

However, the man still showed no signs of waking up when she returned to the apartment about an hour and a half later.

Yu then called an ambulance to take the man to the hospital, who informed her that the man said he started feeling unwell after eating Bak Kut Teh.

The man's friend denied that this was the reason for the man's sickness.

The hospital added that he was vomiting constantly and his condition was very serious.

Missing money

However, Yu alleged that the man later claimed the money he had with him disappeared, and he suspected Yu had taken the money.

She emphasised that she did not enter the guesthouse before the paramedics arrived and only entered the house with the paramedics, making it impossible for her to have taken any of his money.

“I put my heart and soul into every aspect of renting, buying, and decorating my guesthouse," said Yu.

"I really hope that every guest who comes to stay will take good care of my house.”

The man's friend denies the charge that the friend is an unhygienic person and says he tried to get to the toilet, but was too weak to make it there before passing out.
