KL streets filled with litter post-Christmas countdown, M'sia minister calls for mindfulness about cleanliness
Fines will kick in on Jan. 1, 2026.
The streets of a popular shopping and dining belt in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia was strewn with rubbish following the 2025 Christmas countdown event.
Malaysia minister Nga Kor Ming slammed the lack of urban cleanliness in an X post on Dec. 25, where he shared photos of the Bukit Bintang area, which were apparently taken sometime just after midnight on Christmas morning.
Nga wrote:
Please stop littering & don’t embarrass Malaysia.
It is already the 21st century, there is no reason for anyone to simply throw rubbish in public places.
It is so shameful to see such irresponsible behaviour.
Don’t blame the govt when we enforce the law.
Grow up, please!!
The Housing and Local Government Minister highlighted the ongoing issue of littering, particularly in city centres and public areas and how it affects tourism moving forward.
Fines coming up
The Star reported that Nga added that such behaviour is contrary to the nation’s values and poses a significant challenge with Visit Malaysia Year 2026 coming up.
“As Malaysia strides towards becoming a developed nation, maintaining a clean and organised environment is crucial for preserving the country’s image in the eyes of both citizens and tourists,” a statement said, according to The Star.
He added that the effectiveness of keeping Malaysia clean relied heavily on public cooperation.
He also said stricter enforcement measures would be implemented starting from Jan. 1, 2026.
Those found littering in public areas could be fined up to RM2,000 (S$635) and given a community service order of up to 12 hours.
He also urged the public to respect shared spaces and conduct celebrations and festivities with a strong sense of civic duty.
This can be done by making use of rubbish bins and adhering to regulations.
