Pregnant Cambodian soldier killed in Thai-Cambodia border clash

A Cambodian female soldier who was four months pregnant was killed on Dec. 10 while serving on the frontline in Boeung Trakuon amid the ongoing Thailand–Cambodia border conflict.
The soldier, identified as Mut Saveun, 43, was serving with Military Region 5 of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces.
She was stationed in Boeung Trakuon, located in Thma Puok district of Banteay Meanchey province, Khmer Times reported.
On Dec. 11, Cambodia’s Ministry of Women’s Affairs issued a statement mourning her death, describing her as a courageous officer who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the country’s territorial integrity.
Saveun was born into a military family and had spent her life in national service.
She is survived by a daughter who is currently in her second year studying English literature.
Local authorities and academic institutions said Saveun’s body is being kept at the family residence in Chheu Teal commune, where traditional funeral rites are currently underway.
The latest incident comes amid renewed tensions along the frontier, where troops from both countries remain deployed.
Following a separate skirmish in which two Thai soldiers were injured, Thailand carried out air strikes inside Cambodian territory on Dec. 13.
This was followed by rocket barrages launched from the Cambodian side, according to reports.Related stories
