M'sian police claims they shot 3 robbers in self-defence, family members say they were unarmed & killed 'execution-style'
Audio recordings from the case have been made public.
In November 2025, Malaysian police shot three robbers from a gang at Durian Tunggal, Melaka, in what they described as an act of self-defence.
According to Malaysian media reports, the three suspects were on their way to rob a premise when a team of police personnel confronted them.
When the police tried to apprehend them, one of them reportedly slashed an officer with a machete.
Melaka police chief Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said that the police had no choice but to open fire on the three suspects in self-defence.
On Dec. 3, however, lawyers representing the three men's families demanded an investigation into their deaths after presenting audio and forensic evidence.
They said that the evidence showed the three men— M Puspanathan, 21, T Poovaneswaran, 24, and G Logeswaran, 29— were killed "execution-style", Free Malaysia Today reported.
The New Straits Times cited the family as saying the victims were unarmed and did not attack the officer.
According to The Rakyat Post, "damning evidence from a phone call recording" suggests that the three men were "unarmed and begging for their lives" when the police officers shot them.
The Malaysian Bar has called for "absolute transparency" in handling the case.
Even Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has weighed in on the situation.
He said he has instructed the Inspector-General of Police to continue investigations transparently and "not to protect anyone".
"We do not protect criminals, but we also do not protect any actions, including by police officers, that go against the rule of law."
