Boy in M'sia has 12 teeth extracted due to severe cavities from sleeping without brushing them
He also began experiencing headaches and dizziness.
A child in Terengganu, Malaysia, had 12 teeth extracted after they developed cavities due to his habit of sleeping without brushing his teeth after drinking milk, Malaysian media Sin Chew Daily reported.
The boy's medical journey to remove his teeth was documented on Facebook by his mother, Haliza.
She said that her son had developed his habit since he was an infant and had not broken this habit by the age of four.
He also brushed his teeth irregularly, which worsened his cavities.
Woke up with dizziness and headaches
A few months ago, her son would constantly wake up with severe headaches.
These symptoms would also persist throughout the day, even after he finished school, along with dizziness, vomiting and a loss of appetite.
His symptoms did not improve even after his mother took him to multiple clinics, and she eventually took him to a hospital, where he underwent a CT scan.
The scan did not find any abnormalities.
However, during a routine check-up, the paediatrician found that he had abnormal blood pressure, a small hole in his heart and severe damage to his teeth.
Had to extract all 12 teeth at once
A further examination by an oral surgeon confirmed that the boy's teeth were severely damaged.
According to Sin Chew Daily, the doctor had informed her about how the damage had reached her son's nerves and root structure, and could lead to repeated infections if they were not extracted.
The teeth also had to be extracted all at once, under general anaesthesia, instead of in stages.
Haliza added that the surgery went smoothly and her son has since recovered.
She also said the future growth of her son's permanent teeth would not be affected, since all the teeth extracted were baby teeth, and reminded parents to pay attention to their child's oral hygiene to avoid making a mistake similar to hers.
