Woman, 34, who owns debt collection company, fined S$2,000 for posting address & video of debtor online
She said she wanted the public to better understand such cases.
The owner of a debt collection company posted a video of a debtor, along with the debtor’s address and a letter of demand, on social media.
After the video was circulated widely online, the debtor received multiple harassing phone calls.
His son was even questioned by classmates in school.
He subsequently reported the incident to the police.
Yvonne Ho Yi Wen, 34, the owner of Singapore Debt Collection Service, pleaded guilty to one charge under the Protection from Harassment Act on Dec. 15 and was fined S$2,000.
Victim did not pay vinyl seller
According to court documents, the victim had purchased vinyl flooring for his new home in 2024, but apparently refused to pay up.
This was because he had agreed to pay them S$1,700 but was charged over two thousand dollars.
Unable to recover the payment, the seller sought help from Ho’s company to collect the debt.
By Feb. 8, 2024, the amount owed had accumulated to about S$2,411.
Filmed during debt collection
Ho’s employee went to the victim’s home and met him at the unloading bay downstairs.
During the meeting, a dispute broke out, and one of the employees filmed the incident. The victim’s face was visible in the video.
After obtaining the footage, Ho instructed another employee to post it on the debt collection agency’s Facebook page, together with a letter of demand and the victim’s address.
The video went viral, and the victim continued to receive calls via Facebook.
The son of the debtor was also repeatedly questioned about the incident by classmates at school.
Under immense pressure, the victim eventually reported the matter to the police.
Ho later admitted to the police that she had instructed her employee to upload the video, stating that after the video went viral, she wanted the public to better understand the circumstances of such cases, and therefore, did not delete the post.
