Namewee drops new song on Spotify while in remand over Taiwanese influencer's death
The demo was originally recorded in 2014 for his band, P-High.
Malaysian rapper Namewee has dropped a new song on Spotify, titled "Very Shuai" while held in police custody.
The 42-year-old also known as Wee Meng Chee is currently held in a six-day remand until Nov. 10, as police investigate the death of Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh in a Kuala Lumpur hotel. The case has been reclassified as murder.
The song's release on Nov. 5 coincided with the day he had turned himself in to assist with investigations following a police manhunt.
'Very Shuai'
"Very Shuai", meaning "Very Handsome", is an old demo originally recorded in 2014 for his band, P-High.
The song parodies the male obsession with bravado, image and “coolness” in online culture.
It contains lyrics such as "sorry goodbye please don't cry" and details how he rejects the women who confess their love for him.
Scheduled for release in advance
According to The Star, the singer had announced the song's release before becoming involved in the murder investigation.
It is believed that the track was scheduled for weeks in advance rather than it being a deliberate move while the rapper is detained.
Hsieh's manager criticised the artiste's team for the untimely release of the song, stating that it was inappropriate.
"I understand his fans are definitely excited, but can't he wait until the investigations are over before releasing the song?" the manager told China Press.
33-year-old Hsieh was found dead in a hotel room on Oct. 22.
Wee and Hsieh had spent the night together before she died.
Wee was later arrested for alleged drug possession and use, before being released after pleading not guilty on Oct. 24.
However, Hsieh's death was subsequently reclassified as murder.
