Several celebrities shared their condolences and well wishes in the comment section, including Jaspers Lai, Hong Hui Fang, Terence Cao, Xiang Yun, and Pan Ling Ling.

Ong was married to Thia's second daughter, Ivy.

In a Facebook post from Jul. 24, 2024, Ong revealed that he was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer.

"This news has been both shocking and deeply saddening for me and my loved ones," he said.

He shared that he had been experiencing "intermittent pain" in his upper back but didn't think much of it due to his job as a cinematographer.

After several tests, his doctor implied that his time was limited and advised the family to "make necessary arrangements".

While he said that his family had no history of cancer, he suspected that his lifestyle could have contributed to the diagnosis.

"I have always been a night owl, often sleeping only 4-5 hours a night. Lack of adequate rest could have taken a toll on my body."

He ended the post saying that in a year, he hoped to announce that he was "cancer free".

Ong leaves behind his wife and three children.
