70 LED wreaths line road near Pek Kio CC, all switched on late into night: Alvin Tan
Please be considerate even in times of grief.
An ongoing wake had 70 LED wreaths lining Gloucester Road opposite Pek Kio Community Club.
This far surpassed the 10 allowed under the National Environment Agency (NEA) guidelines.
In an Instagram post on Nov. 10, Minister of State for National Development, and Trade and Industry, Alvin Tan shared that Pek Kio and Farrer Park residents had voiced their concerns.
Tan is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tanjong Pagar, Pek Kio CC is located.
Town council requests ignored
Tan said the wreaths obstructed lines of sight for motorists and pedestrians, which caused near misses for parents and students from nearby primary and pre-schools.
Several wreaths also fell onto the road in front of a zebra crossing, blocking traffic and becoming a hazard for drivers.
Tan noted that the town council reached out to the family and requested for them to remove the excess wreaths.
However, the family did not heed the town council's request and "repeated gentle reminders", and remained "uncooperative", making matters difficult for town council workers.
They had even switched on all 70 LED wreaths late into the night.
Tan added that he empathised with families when they lose their loved ones.
However, for other bereaved families, "most of the wakes are dignified affairs, and the families do not cause disamenities to their fellow residents", he noted.
Guidelines for Light-Emitting Wreaths at Funeral Wakes
According to NEA guidelines, a maximum of 10 light-emitting wreaths (inclusive of up to one inflatable) can be deployed at each funeral wake.
Deployment shall be confined to the funeral wake area (e.g. HDB void decks, pavilion) and is subject to conditions and approvals from town councils or the relevant authority.
Light-emitting wreaths and inflatables should not be placed near carparks, roads, walkways, business entities or residences, as they will obstruct traffic.
More information on the guidelines can be found here.
