4,634 S'pore vehicles fined over S$437,000 at Johor border for not having valid VEP
Rules were tightened on Nov. 1 such that Singapore drivers will be barred from leaving Malaysia if they do not pay their VEP fines.
A total of 4,634 Singapore vehicles have been fined by Malaysia's Road Transport Department (JPJ) between Jul. 1 and Nov. 13 under the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) Enforcement Operation, according to JPJ, Malay Mail reported.
This included those not registered for the VEP, have an expired VEP or have vehicles still in the pre-registration state.
The total amount in summonses issued added up to RM1.39 million (S$437, 216).
VEP enforcement began at all Malaysia-Singapore land borders from Jul. 1 this year, which means that all foreign-registered vehicles would need a VEP tag installed to be allowed into Malaysia.
Malaysia has also recently tightened this rule, stipulating that Singapore drivers will be barred from leaving Malaysia if they do not pay their VEP fines.
Fines for not having a valid VEP amount to RM300 (S$90).
