Two aircraft from U.S. aircraft carrier USS Nimitz crashed into the South China Sea within 30 minutes of each other on Oct. 27, AP reported, citing the U.S. Navy.
A MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter and a F/A-18F Super Hornet crashed. The three crew members of the helicopter and two aviators of the fighter jet managed to safely eject and were rescued by their comrades.
The reason behind the crashes is currently under investigation.
USS Nimitz was deployed in the Middle East region in response to Houthi rebel attacks on commercial shipping.
It was on its way back to Washington state on the Pacific west coast of the U.S., before its decommissioning.
USS Nimitz has a storied history, being commissioned in 1975, and as such is in its 50th year of service.
It served in the first Gulf War, the Iraq War and has been regularly deployed to the Middle East in response to a number of crises.
