A 25-year-old woman, Low Hui Mei, was charged by the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) on Oct. 24 for allegedly trafficking vape pods that contained etomidate.

On Oct. 22, the police detained her after finding vapes on Low at King George’s Avenue.

The police were conducting checks in the vicinity when they found Low.

HSA, who were alerted to the scene, seized 11 vapes and 101 vape pods from Low.

The pods were tested in a lab and confirmed to contain etomidate, HSA said on Oct. 24.

Etomidate is a controlled substance with anaesthetic properties that can result in nausea, vomiting, muscle spasms, and seizures, among other adverse effects.

Investigations are ongoing, and the court case has been adjourned to Oct. 31.

Offenders caught importing vapes laced with etomidate, also known as Kpods, can face three to 20 years' imprisonment and five to 15 strokes of the cane.

Those who sell or distribute them can face two to 10 years' imprisonment and two to five strokes of the cane.

Under the Poison Act, possessing or using Kpods is also an offence that carries a fine of up to S$10,000, a jail sentence of up to 2 years, or both.
