An elderly woman in Taiwan has sparked controversy online after lashing out at a pregnant passenger, who refused to give up her seat on the train.

Pregnant and knee injured

According to local news media outlet Liberty Times, on Oct. 18, a video of the incident was posted in a Facebook group, and subsequently gained widespread attention.

In the clip, an elderly woman, who was wearing glasses and a sun visor, could be seen asking a young woman sitting in a priority seat if she could give up her seat for an elderly man nearby.

In response, the young woman said that she was pregnant and suffering from a knee injury, which made it inconvenient for her to give up her seat.

Asked woman's child to give up seat instead

Undeterred, the elderly woman then modified her request, saying that she wanted the woman's child, who was seated beside her, to give up their seat instead, ETtoday reported.

The young woman, clearly frustrated, asked why the elderly woman was singling her and her child out, pointing out that there were other youthful passengers seated nearby.

In response, the elderly woman told her that all the other seats were occupied.

However, this only infuriated the young woman, who retorted with, "Is there an empty seat here?"

"Don't have any more children"

According to ETtoday, after a brief silence, the elderly woman suddenly said sarcastically, "If you have a conscience, you'll know after thinking about it".

"Don't have any more children," she taunted. "You won't be able to raise them well anyway."

Online reactions

The video quickly went viral, drawing widespread criticism from online users, ETtoday reported.

"She talks about conscience and then curses someone to not have children, how ironic," one commenter wrote.

Another stated, "It's not that the elderly that have become bad, it's that bad people have grown old."

"Priority seats are meant for those in need," one comment read. "They're not the exclusive property of the elderly."
