Blind German man, 69, waited hours outside house for wife in Thailand, unaware she died inside
She became the sole breadwinner after an accident eventually left the man completely blind.
A blind German man living in Thailand spent hours on Oct. 14 waiting for his Thai wife outside their house, unaware she had died inside.
Khaosod English reported that the incident occurred at a rented house in a subdistrict near the border of Bangkok.
Police from Mueang Chachoengsao Station were notified of the death at 6:30pm on Oct. 14.
Discovering wife dead
The situation came to light when a 69-year-old German man, Dick, sat outside his house for hours, according to Khaosod English.
Dick called out for his wife, Nisara, 53, but she did not respond.
He then asked neighbours for help.
His neighbours who entered the house and turned on the lights discovered that Nisara had died.
She was found with a rope around her neck attached to the staircase railing.
The house was a two-storey concrete house, according to Siam News.
Caring for blind husband
According to another neighbour, the couple rented the house for over a year.
As a taxi driver in Bangkok, Nisara returned home every few days.
She prepared sandwiches for her husband and stored them in the refrigerator before leaving for work.
Nisara became the sole breadwinner after an accident several years ago caused Dick to become completely blind gradually.
The couple's German-speaking neighbour, Nee, said Dick came from Germany to retire in Thailand and began a relationship with Nisara.
Too much pressure
Khaosod English reported that on Oct. 14, Nisara, who returned home by taxi, told neighbours she got into a traffic accident while driving.
According to Nisara, the other party reportedly demanded 40,000 baht (S$1,592) in compensation.
Since she could not afford that amount, she said she'd go home to wait and negotiate a solution.
Her neighbours believe the financial pressure and exhaustion as the sole breadwinner led to her death.
The police have sent her body for an autopsy, and investigations are ongoing.
