Trump to attend signing of Cambodia-Thailand peace deal at Asean summit in KL
He is expected to be in attendance from Oct. 26 to 28 at the event.
United States (U.S.) president Donald Trump will attend the signing of a peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia at the upcoming Asean summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
According to Free Malaysia Today (FMT), Malaysia's foreign minister Mohamad Hasan said on Oct. 14 that Trump is "looking forward" to witnessing the peace deal between the two countries.
He is expected to attend the event from Oct. 26 to 28.
U.S. and Malaysia jointly led ceasefire deal
Both U.S. and Malaysia have been working on an expanded ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia following border tensions involving the two countries, reported AP News.
The two countries have been clashing in several areas near their borders since Jul. 24, 2025.
The fight first broke out near the Ta Muen Thom temple, which is claimed by both countries, displacing tens of thousands of civilians.
Mediation efforts jointly led by Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim resulted in the ceasefire after both leaders threatened to suspend trade privileges if Thailand and Cambodia did not agree to a truce.
"We want the violence to stop": Malaysia's foreign minister
According to The Star, Hasan said that there has been a proposal for both the U.S. and Malaysia to act as facilitators to the peace deal signing.
"We want the violence to stop and for it (the ceasefire) to be overseen by an Asean Observers Team," he added.
Thailand and Cambodia have also been asked to remove all landmines along the disputed borders and ensure the "retreat of war machinery", as part of the agreement.
Thailand's foreign minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said on Oct. 14 that both countries are currently engaging in dialogue on "various border and bilateral matters", reported The Nation.
He added that talks are currently "going well".
