Vietnam to send 1st transgender contestant for Miss Universe 2025 pageant

Vietnam's representative in the Miss Universe 2025 pageant will make history as the country's first transgender contestant.
On Sep. 24, Miss Universe Vietnam announced that they had chosen Nguyen Huong Giang as the country's representative in the competition.
Chosen directly instead of holding pageant
According to Vietnamese mediaย VNExpress,ย instead of holding a domestic pageant, Nguyen had been chosen directly by Miss Universe Vietnam for her feminine beauty, inspiring personal story, intelligence and confidence.
Under Miss Universe rules, contestants must be confirmed by Sep. 30, with priority given to domestic titleholders.
Nguyen had won the Miss International Queen pageant in 2018, a beauty pageant for transgender women.
Since then, she has been active as a singer, TV personality and actress.
She also became a producer for Miss International Vietnam in 2024.
Transgender women have been allowed to participate in the pageant since 2013.
In 2023, the pageant was also opened to married women and mothers.
