Trump calls the recognition of a Palestinian state ‘a reward’ too great for Hamas' atrocities
At least 150 countries have already recognised a Palestinian state.
U.S. President Donald Trump said that recognising a Palestinian state would be a reward "too great for Hamas terrorists for their atrocities".
"As if to encourage continued conflict, some of this body is seeking to unilaterally recognise a Palestinian state," he said.
Trump was speaking at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York City on Tuesday (Sep. 23), where world leaders are gathered for a week-long conference on global issues, including whether or not to back a two-state solution for the Gaza conflict.
'Release the hostages now'
"This would be a reward for these horrible atrocities, including Oct. 7, even while they refuse to release the hostages or accept a ceasefire," he said.
"Instead of giving in to Hamas' ransom demands, those who want peace should be united with one message, release the hostages now," Trump added.
Trump pointed out that the Palestinian military group has "repeatedly rejected reasonable offers to make peace" and release hostages, alive or dead.
"We got to get the hostages back. We want all 20 back. We don't want two and four," he added.
At least 150 nations have now recognised a Palestinian state and backed a two-state solution, the latest including France on Sep. 23.
