Police in Malaysia have arrested a lorry driver after 12-month old baby boy died and eight others injured in a traffic accident involving four vehicles at the Bukit Kajang Toll Plaza in Selangor on Sep. 27.
The accident involved a three-tonne lorry carrying scrap items, a Nissan X-Trail four-wheel drive belonging to the Public Works Department (JKR), a Honda City and a Proton X70, Malay Mail and Free Malaysia Today (FMT) reported.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) operations assistant director Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said they received an emergency call at 11am and immediately dispatched six firefighters to the scene.
Firefighters arrived at the scene about 11 minutes later and found a baby boy trapped under the Nissan X-Trail.
He was rescued at about 11:30am, but was pronounced dead by medical personnel.
A man who was trapped under the same vehicle was rescued about 10 minutes earlier and was sent to the hospital for treatment.
Seven other victims who were injured were also sent by ambulance to hospital for treatment.
42-year-old lorry driver arrested
The Malaysian police have arrested a 42-year-old lorry driver, according to Malay Mail.
Initial investigations found that the lorry experienced a brake failure, causing the driver to lose control and collide with three other vehicles.
Police revealed that the lorry driver has three criminal records related to drug and criminal offences, as well as four previous summonses for traffic violations in 2013 and 2016.
A urine test on the man came back negative for drugs and alcohol.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving causing death.
