Man next to S'pore car pumps subsidised RON95 petrol into container in Johor, M'sia authorities investigating
Not allowed.
A man, believed to have been driving a Singapore-registered car, was allegedly seen pumping RON95 petrol at a petrol station in Johor Bahru.
The incident allegedly occurred at a petrol station in Iskandar Puteri, based on the surroundings captured in the image.
The car, a Mini Cooper, and its licence plate, could be seen clearly in the image.
The man was apparently filling a plastic container with RON95 petrol, which suggested he could have been purchasing extra fuel to go.
Public outcry
The image sparked a public outcry as RON95 petrol is subsidised by the Malaysia government and reserved for Malaysians.
It is dispensed from yellow nozzles at petrol stations there.
Foreign-registered vehicles are not allowed to purchase the fuel.
Authorities investigating
The Johor branch of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has launched an investigation following the outcry, Sinar Harian reported on Aug. 4.
“KPDN Johor is aware of the viral image showing a foreign-registered vehicle, believed to be owned by a Singaporean, refuelling with RON95 at a petrol station in Johor Bahru,” the ministry said.
About 33% cheaper
RON95 fuel is priced at about RM2.05 (S$0.63) per litre.
Foreign-registered vehicles can refuel with RON97 or RON100 instead.
RON97, which is permitted for Singapore motorists to purchase within Malaysia, is currently priced at RM3.17 (S$0.96).
If a foreigner buys subsidised fuel at a petrol station in Malaysia, the operator can be fined up to RM1 million (S$300,000) or jailed for three years.
