Officers from the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) foiled an attempt to smuggle 5,900 vapes and related components into Singapore via Woodlands Checkpoint on Jul. 24.

ICA shared information on the bust in a Facebook post on Tuesday (Aug. 5).

Hidden around car compartments

The vapes were discovered after ICA officers directed a Malaysian-registered vehicle for enhanced checks.

A total of 5,900 vapes and related components as well as 150 cartons of heatsticks were found.

The items were hidden in various car compartments, such as in the engine compartment and under seats.

"The case was referred to the Health Sciences Authority for further investigation," ICA said.

Not the only vape bust in July

Earlier on Jul. 30, ICA shared on Facebook about a different attempt to smuggle vapes into the country via Tuas Checkpoint.

The vapes were found in a Malaysia-registered lorry carrying "precast products".

After directing the vehicle for enhanced checks, ICA officers found "2,400 units of e-vaporisers and related components hidden inside the lidded compartment of a flat plate which was on top of the trailer chassis."

The case was similarly referred to the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) for further investigation, ICA wrote.

Two similar attempts were also foiled by ICA officers on Jul. 8.

According to the HSA website, any person who is convicted of importing or distributing e-vaporisers is liable to a fine not exceeding $10,000 or imprisonment for up to six months or both for the first offence.

Second or subsequent offences carry a fine not exceeding $20,000 or imprisonment for up to 12 months or both.
