WhatsappThe police in Malaysia shot and killed a 36-year-old man after a gunfire exchange in the wee hours of Wednesday, Aug. 6.

The man is believed to be the leader of a criminal group that has been involved in house-breaking and burglary across Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, and Perak since last year, Malay Mail and Sin Chew reported.

The deceased's alleged criminal activities have reportedly resulted in over RM1 million (S$305,000) in losses.

Acting Director of Bukit Aman's Criminal Investigation Department, Datuk Fadil Marsus, said that the victim had 44 previous convictions, including robbery, burglary, and drug-related offences.

Exchanged fires

The 36-year-old was driving a car along Jalan Bukit Tunku, Kuala Lumpur at about 4:40am on Wednesday (Aug. 6) when he was intercepted by the police.

According to Sin Chew, the man responded by firing several shots at the police, who retaliated and shot the man dead on the spot.

The police then launched a search on the man's car and seized several items, including a revolver and drugs.

The police also found a bulletproof vest with the word 'Police' on it.

It is believed that the bulletproof vest was used by the group to impersonate police officers to commit crimes.
