We are being very careful not to be collateral damage: Vivian Balakrishnan on S'pore's approach to US-China relations
Singapore does not want "to be forced to choose sides".
In a speech during the 17th Asean and Asia Forum on Aug. 5, Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan emphasised Singapore's careful and deliberate approach to managing its relations with both the United States and China.
Singapore does not "want to be forced to choose sides"
Vivian shared that when it comes to Singapore's relationships with the U.S. and China, they have to be "carefully [managed]", not just on a one-to-one basis, but also in navigating the complex space between the two superpowers and understanding where Singapore fits within that dynamic.
He said that Singapore does not want "to be forced to choose sides". Instead, it aims to remain valuable to both countries so that they have a vested interest in Singapore's continued success and prosperity.
Vivian added that in the first half of 2025, Singapore has maintained diplomatic engagement with senior leaders in both Washington, U.S. and Beijing, China, and received generally positive signals.
Being careful not to become "collateral damage"
Vivian also acknowledged the broader impact of trade measures like tariffs and supply chain changes, and noted that these actions are not targeted specifically at Singapore.
He states that Singapore is being "very very careful not to be collateral damage in between" the U.S. and China, and affirmed that Singapore's relationships with the two countries are "so far, so good".
