Four foreign dignitaries from three countries joined in Singapore's National Day celebrations at the Padang on Aug. 9, at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

The four in attendance were Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, the Regent of Johor Tunku Ismail, who was accompanied by his Consort Khaleeda Bustamam, and Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Rural and Regional Development Zahid Hamidi, who represented Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

They were introduced to the crowds in a walk-in, following Singapore's Cabinet and Members of Parliament (MP), and were seated among Singapore's leaders in the VIP stand.

"Singapore is honoured by the presence of dignitaries from our closest neighbours at our milestone celebration. Their attendance underscores our shared geographic and historical ties and reflects the enduring strength of our friendships," MFA said in a statement on Aug. 8.

This marks the first time foreign leaders have been invited to a National Day Parade in Singapore since 2019, before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In 2019, former Indonesian President Joko Widodo, former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and Brunei's Sultan Bolkiah were in attendance.
