The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will be trialling luggage racks on bus service 36 to better serve airport-bound commuters.

The three-tiered luggage rack will be trialled on one of the buses on service 36 for three months from Aug. 17, LTA said in a Facebook post.

New racks to serve airport commuters

According to LTA, the luggage rack can safely store up to six large pieces of luggage.

It will also have secure storage features such as anti-slip flooring, anti-roll hump and sloping platforms.

LTA explained that it chose bus service 36 as it is the only direct bus service between Changi Airport and the city.

Based on the Go-Ahead Singapore website, the bus service 36 route starts from Changi Airport and is a loop that plies Marine Parade Road and Orchard Road before returning.

It notably stops at Parkway Parade, Suntec City, as well as the Dhoby Ghaut, Somerset and Orchard MRT Stations.

LTA added that it will be collecting feedback via onboard surveys during the duration of the three-month trial.

Was suggested before

This is not the first time that the suggestion has been raised to have luggage racks on public buses travelling to and from Changi Airport.

As as early as December 2023, a forum letter arguing for luggage racks to be installed on bus service 36 was published in The Straits Times

Another ST forum letter in February, on the same matter, pointed out that having suitcases placed "along the aisle, on seats and in front of them" could pose a safety risk to passengers.
