Two persons died in hospital after being evacuated by firefighters from a fire that broke out in a Bukit Merah Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat on Aug. 13.

The fire

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in a Facebook post that they responded to a fire at Block 106 Jalan Bukit Merah at around 4pm.

Upon arrival, the living room and bedroom of a fourth-floor unit were on fire, and the fire was extinguished with a water jet, SCDF said.

A clip shared to TikTok showed thick smoke emanating from the windows of the affected unit.

SCDF firefighters were seen raising a ladder to reach the unit.

Police officers were also at the scene.

Two died in hospital

During the firefighting operation, firefighters found two unresponsive persons in the kitchen and carried them out of the unit immediately, SCDF said.

Both persons were conveyed to Singapore General Hospital (SGH).

Police told Mothership that the 34-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman were conveyed unconscious to the hospital, and subsequently passed away.

SCDF also conveyed two other persons from neighbouring units to the hospital.

One of them had experienced smoke inhalation, while the other felt unwell.

About 60 persons from the affected block were evacuated by the police and SCDF as a precautionary measure.

Cause of the fire under investigation

The cause of the fire is under investigation, said SCDF.

Police said that based on preliminary investigations, they do not suspect foul play.

Police investigations are ongoing.
