A couple returning from work was shocked to find their one-year and seven-month-old toddler dead about 20 metres from their home in Selangor, Malaysia on Jul. 23.

The toddler, who was under the care of his uncle at the time, was believed to have wandered outside when his uncle was sleeping, and got mauled by stray dogs in the vicinity, police told Malaysian media.

Found unconscious with bite marks, scratches

The incident reportedly took place in an Orang Asli village in the Sungai Buloh area of Selangor on Jul. 23.

Sungai Buloh police chief Mohd Hafiz Muhammad Nor told Malaysian media that police received a call at 8:40am from a medical officer at Sungai Buloh Hospital, who told them an unconscious toddler had been rushed to the emergency department.

Despite efforts to resuscitate him, the toddler was unresponsive and was pronounced dead at 9:14am.

A detailed examination revealed multiple scratches and bite marks on his head and body, which are consistent with an animal attack, New Straits Times reported.

Believed to have wandered out when uncle was sleeping

Hafiz said his parents, aged 31 and 29, had returned from work at 8:15am when they found the door to their home ajar, Bernama reported.

To their horror, their toddler, who had been sleeping in the living room under the care of his uncle, was missing.

The toddler's parents subsequently found him unconscious about 20 metres from the house with several stray dogs near the body, Hafiz said.

"It was only after the uncle of the deceased heard the screams of the couple that he realised the toddler had been attacked by stray dogs," Hafiz said, as cited by China Press.

The body has been sent to the forensics department of Sungai Buloh Hospital for an autopsy, NST reported.

The case is being investigated for negligence under the Child Act.
