Dragon fruit have been spotted growing on mature trees at a car park along Ang Mo Kio Street 32, much to the surprise of nearby residents and passersby.
A passerby who recently visited the area told Shin Min Daily News that he was shocked to see the fruits ripening on the tree and immediately snapped photos of the unusual sight.
When a Shin Min reporter visited the scene, they found that two trees, each over 10m tall, had dragon fruit vines growing on them.
Of the two, one tree had three dragon fruits, with one already ripen and bright red in colour.
May have sprouted from discarded seeds
Another reader, who often parks his bus at the car park, said the trees have been there for at least 50 years.
It was only in recent years, he noted, that dragon fruit plants began climbing up their trunks.
Another interviewee speculated that the dragon fruit plants may have sprouted from seeds discarded nearby.
He suggested that birds could have pecked at the leftover fruits from a nearby fruit shop, and their droppings, containing the seeds, landed on the trees, allowing the vines to take root and grow.
He said: "I had noticed the dragon fruit vines before, but I never thought they would actually flower and bear fruit."
Dragon fruit plants are climbing cacti that can grow by attaching themselves to trees, rocks, or other structures for support.
