A phone repairman transferred explicit photos and videos of women from devices entrusted to him for repair between 2022 and 2024, where he was only caught after a customer noticed images of his wife were forwarded from his phone.

Low Jwen Sern, 27, was sentenced to six months' jail on Jul. 24, after the prosecutor sought a jail term of six to seven months.

The Malaysian national was a sales assistant at Fangli Trading, located at Block 727 Clementi West Street 2, where he handled, assessed, and repaired customers’ mobile phones.

A gag order has been placed on the victim's identity.

What happened

According to the statement of facts, the husband brought his Samsung A42 mobile phone to the shop on Sep. 23, 2024, as he was facing issues with the phone’s charging port.

Low's colleagues informed the man that he would need to leave his mobile phone overnight to be repaired, where the necessary assessment and repairs were later completed.

On Sep. 25, 2024, Low searched through the phone's photo gallery and WhatsApp chats and found 12 and 15 intimate photos of the woman with her face exposed.

As the phone was an Android and did not have the AirDrop function, Low used a Bluetooth transfer feature and forwarded the photos to his company phone.

He then forwarded the photos to his personal iPhone through WhatsApp.

When the husband collected his phone, he noticed a prompt stating that the images had been forwarded, and he made a police report soon after.

Investigations found Low forwarded at least 71 explicit photos and eight videos to himself from five customers who had left their phones at the shop.

He admitted that there were more customers, though the number is unknown, as he subsequently deleted the media after consuming them for his pleasure.

Low was not caught earlier as Apple devices do not maintain a historical log of AirDrop transfers, the court heard.

For possessing intimate images without consent, an offender may be given a maximum jail term of two years, a fine, or both.
