A man, 27, was accosted at his Toa Payoh home by his girlfriend's parents and the police were eventually called — again.

This was after the man's girlfriend, 21, chose to stay with him instead of going home.

The parents of the woman then reportedly scattered joss paper in front of the flat of their daughter's boyfriend, and attempted to break them up.

The boyfriend, Tan, has now come forward with his side of the story.

Was allegedly assaulted by girlfriend's dad

Tan told Mothership on Jul. 30 that he had tried repeatedly to resolve things peacefully with his girlfriend's parents, but in vain.

He said his girlfriend's father, Yang (transliteration from Chinese), had twice gotten physical with him.

Took issue with skin and job

The couple has been dating for two years, they revealed.

The woman, Xin, shared that her parents had voiced their disapproval of her choice of partner several times, but things came to a head only two weeks ago.

The 21-year-old polytechnic student had mentioned out of frustration that she wanted to quit school due to financial constraints.

Her parents do not give her an allowance, she said, and she was stressed juggling school and her part-time job.

But her parents blamed Tan for this.

Showed up one day at flat

Without warning, they showed up at Tan's home uninvited one day while he was not around.

They spoke to Tan's mother, who was "shocked" at the sudden appearance of Xin's parents.

Tan subsequently approached his girlfriend's parents, hoping to resolve the situation, but they were unable to reach an amicable solution.

Xin's parents apparently took issue with Tan's skin condition and his job.

Previously, Yang told Shin Min Daily News reporters that Tan "does not have a proper job and has a serious skin condition".

Tan clarified that he has eczema, and works nights as a bar manager.

Got physical

On Jul. 17 or 18, Yang called Tan's mother at around 3am, saying that he wanted to go over again a second time.

Tan was working at the time, but rushed home from work to meet his girlfriend's father.

"I greeted him. But without saying anything, he just punched me in the face," Tan alleged.

Tan's friends pulled Yang away, but Tan did not call the police as he still hoped to resolve matters.

Went over again

But several days later, at around 2am on Jul. 22, Xin's parents went over again.

They were unhappy as Xin had stayed till late at her boyfriend's home.

She had been caring for him while he suffered a bout of food poisoning.

Got physical again

Things allegedly quickly got physical again.

Home surveillance footage viewed by Mothership showed a verbal argument, which rapidly escalated.

An older man was seen kicking Tan hard.

The same older man also slapped Xin, after which Tan attempted to restrain him.

In response, the man hit Tan with a foldable chair.

Tan's sister subsequently called the police.

Joss paper incident

After the police arrived to break up the fight, they told Yang not to visit the Toa Payoh flat anymore.

But later the same day, Yang and his wife went over to scatter the joss paper in front of the flat and demand that their daughter go home.

They also left three beer cans and a red packet with a written message indicating the cutting of ties.

When the police arrived to mediate the situation once again, they told the parents that their daughter was already 21 years old.

They also entreated her to go home, which she eventually did.

Prepared to move in with boyfriend

Xin still frequently goes over to her boyfriend's house, and was present when Mothership went down to speak to the young couple on Wednesday afternoon.

She explained that the atmosphere at home is stressful, as her parents often express their disapproval of her boyfriend.

But she hopes to be able to live and let live with her parents in the meantime.
