Irish man, 43, allegedly steals 3 bottles of perfume worth S$658.70 from Changi Airport T1 shops on 2 occasions, gets arrested
Two of the three perfumes were recovered.
The police have arrested a 43-year-old male Irish national for his involvement in two cases of shop theft committed in the transit area of Changi Airport.
Shop located at transit area
The police were alerted to a case of shop theft at “The Shilla Cosmetics & Perfumes” outlet located in the transit area of Changi Airport Terminal 1 on Jun. 9 at about 10:05am.
Preliminary investigations revealed that on Jun. 8, the man had allegedly taken two bottles of perfumes with a total value of S$491.70, from the outlet’s display shelf and exited the store without paying.
The perfumes were subsequently discovered missing by the staff during stock-taking.
Suspect already departed from Singapore
With the aid of surveillance cameras, officers from Airport Police Division established the identity of the man, but he had already departed from Singapore.
Flew back to Singapore and got arrested
On Jun. 13, the man flew back to Changi Airport on transit for another flight and was arrested by the police.
Further investigations revealed that the man had also committed another shop theft on Jun. 13, and allegedly stole one perfume valued at S$167 from another “The Shilla Cosmetics & Perfumes” outlet in Changi Airport Terminal 1 prior to his arrest.
Two of the three stolen perfumes were recovered from him — one bottle of Chanel Chance Eau Tendre and one bottle of Rabanne Million Gold.
The man will be charged in court on Jul. 8 for the offence of theft in dwelling.
Penalties
The man could be jailed up to seven years, or fined, or both.
The police said they take a serious view of shop theft cases and offenders will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.
The police added that they will continue to work closely with stakeholders and the community to prevent and deter cases of shop theft.
