S'porean actress Eleanor Lee's ex-assistant to compensate losses & make public apology for fabricated audio clip of actress

A former assistant of Singaporean actress Eleanor Lee will be issuing a public apology and making compensation for emotional distress and economic losses due to a fabricated audio recording earlier this May.

Two months ago, the 25-year-old actress faced backlash in China after she was accused of insulting Chinese nationals in an audio clip.

In the clip, a woman could be heard saying in Mandarin, "[...] because most Chinese nationals are idiots, most of them are," amongst other things.

Lee denied ever saying such things, and a former assistant of the actress later issued a public apology for "maliciously editing, synthesising and fabricating" recordings of Lee, in a bid to claim compensation from her former company.

Court ordered assistant to issue public apology

Lee's lawyer posted a statement on Weibo on Jul. 29, revealing that the former assistant had fabricated defamatory content about Lee online, despite knowing such content would damage the actress' reputation.

The assistant's actions, which were done to "vent their unhappiness", brought Lee psychological harm and affected her commercial activities, the lawyer stated.

The court has ordered the assistant to issue a public apology and compensate Lee for emotional distress, legal expenses, and other economic losses.

The judgement was issued on Jun. 23 and came into effect on Jul. 17.

Several users were also identified as having deliberately fabricated and disseminated false information about the actress.

The statement noted that lawsuits will be filed against them if they do not delete the content after the statement is published.

Lee's management team reposted the lawyer's statement onto their Weibo account and reiterated that Lee loved and respected Chinese culture.
