Liverpool football star Diogo Jota, 28, died in a car crash in the early hours of Jul. 3 in Zamora in northwestern Spain, just two weeks after getting married, local media reported.

The Portuguese footballer died alongside his 26-year-old brother, Andre Felipe, after the car they were travelling in crashed and caught on fire.

The incident reportedly occurred on the A-52 road in the Zamora region.

Emergency services in the region confirmed the crash, and medics present at the scene confirmed the deaths of two people.

Jota and his long-term girlfriend Rute Cardoso had just tied the knot less than two weeks prior on Jun. 22.

The couple had three children together, and they welcomed their youngest in November last year.

The Portuguese professional footballer played as a forward for Premier League club Liverpool, winning the Premier League title in May 2025.

He had also recently helped his country to win the Nations League tournament, playing alongside other Portuguese stars like Cristiano Ronaldo.
