China overtakes Japan as S'poreans' top travel destination for June 2025
Singaporeans are also shown to prioritise different things depending on where they travel to.
Step aside, Japan. There's a new favourite in town.
China has become the top travel destination for Singaporeans this June, with a 58 per cent growth in visitor numbers.
The shift highlights Singaporeans’ growing interest in China as a wallet-friendly destination offering diverse travel experiences, according to a YouTrip press release on Jul. 1.
YouTrip told Mothership that the insights are the result of an analysis of their users' transaction data and user interviews.
Asia continues to dominate as top travel destination for Singaporeans
The top cities visited in China include Shanghai, Shenzhen, Beijing, Guangzhou, and Chengdu, as they are seen as accessible, first-timer-friendly gateways to experience China’s culture and cuisine.
YouTrip noted that popular Chinese brands such as Pop Mart, Chagee, and Hai Di Lao also played a role in China's appeal as a travel destination, with many Singaporeans actively seeking them out during their trips.
Asia continues to dominate with 80 per cent due to lower-cost travel.
The top holiday destinations for Singaporeans are Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, the UK, and the U.S.
Regional travel remained the preferred choice due to shorter flight times and more affordable airfares.
According to Kelvin Lam, Chief Operating Officer of YouTrip, "Our findings reveal a clear trend where Singaporeans are prioritising destinations with stronger cost-to-value appeal, paired with more deliberate planning to maximise every dollar."
Travel based on what you value
Singaporeans are also shown to prioritise different things depending on where they travel to.
While travellers to Southeast Asian destinations prioritised eating local cuisines, those going to North Asia prioritised retail shopping.
Going to popular retailers such as Miniso in China, GU in Japan, and Olive Young in South Korea, travellers going to North Asia spent 300 per cent more compared to those visiting Southeast Asia.
The appeal lies in the more attractive prices for similar products, due to local brand pricing and tax refunds.
To offset their retail splurges, many opt for budget-friendly meals from convenience stores, food halls, and fast-food establishments, reflecting a practical and value-conscious approach to their overall travel expenses, said YouTrip.
For those travelling to Western destinations such as the U.S., UK, and Australia, they focused on adventurous and cultural activities, including national parks, musicals, and museums.
YouTrip noted that travellers in the UK and Australia tend to choose home-cooked meals instead of dining out, as a cost-conscious approach is often preferred for scenic, outdoor-focused travels.
More people travelling
One in four travelled to multiple destinations this June, reflecting a persistent demand for travel.
Families are the most frequent travellers during the June holidays due to the month-long school break.
Millennials (aged 30 to 44) and Gen X (aged 45 to 59) made up the largest share of travellers, who most travelled to destinations such as China, Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand, as they were cost-effective, short-haul trips.
Gen Z travellers (aged 18–29) had a more diverse choice of destinations.
"Unlike older generations who prefer tangible keepsakes, Gen Z prioritised unique, immersive experiences over material purchases," said YouTrip.
Travellers aged 60 and above often opt for all-inclusive tours or cruises, emphasising comfort and convenience in their slower-paced itineraries.
In terms of duration, trips to Southeast Asian hotspots were often for quick weekend getaways, while North Asia itineraries typically last close to a week.
However, regardless of the country, certain brands remained consistent favourites among Singaporeans, including Uniqlo, McDonald's, and Starbucks.
