It will be deemed unable to clear its debt if it cannot make payment by the deadline.
Cinema chain Cathay Cineplexes has been asked to pay its former landlord S$3.4 million, The Straits Times reported.
Lendlease Global Commercial Reit issued mm2 Asia a statutory demand following the closure of Cathay Cineplexes outlet at Jem shopping mall on Mar. 27.
mm2 Asia is the the cinema chain’s operator.
Lendlease Global Commercial Reit operates Jem.
The exact sum asked for is S$3,446,748.26, CNA reported.
Deadline for payment
mm2 Asia said in a Singapore Exchange filing on Jul. 2 that the deadline for payment is Jul. 22.
It will be deemed unable to clear its debt if it cannot make payment by the deadline.
A contractual interest of 1 per cent per month, calculated on a daily basis, applies from the date the money is due.
Cathay Cineplexes, as well as the board of mm2 Asia, are seeking legal advice regarding this demand.
The alternative to paying up is to secure or compound the said sum “to the reasonable satisfaction of the landlord”, the notice added, Business Times reported.
The landlord was previously seeking S$4.3 million in rental arrears from Cathay Cineplexes when the Cathay Cineplexes outlet at Jem shopping mall closed.
Cathay Cineplexes was "actively engaging" with the landlord to "negotiate and resolve issues" pertaining to the occupation of the premises and rent arrears, mm2 Asia said then.
