Thio Su Mien, 1st woman NUS law dean, passes away at 86
She co-founded TSMP Law Corporation in 1998.
Thio Su Mien, the first woman dean of the National University of Singapore (NUS) law faculty from 1969 to 1971, died at the age of 86 on Jun. 30 morning.
The Straits Times reported that Thio died from acute myeloid leukaemia.
She was diagnosed with the condition in early May.
Thio was the youngest person to hold that role of dean of NUS law faculty.
A constitutional law expert, she co-founded TSMP Law Corporation with Tan Bee Lian in 1998.
She played a key role in the takeover of the Association of Women for Action and Research’s leadership in 2009 by a Christian faction.
She was married to Thio Gim Hock, an Olympian and real estate tycoon, who died at the age of 82 in 2020.
The couple had three children.
Thio’s son is senior counsel Thio Shen Yi at TSMP Law Corporation.
Thio’s first daughter is Thio Li-ann, 57, a former Nominated Member of Parliament.
The youngest sibling, Thio Chi-ann, 52, is a housewife living in Britain
