S'pore PHV driver, 49, who worked 15-hour days to support 2 children dies of stroke, fellow drivers rally to support family
He is remembered as a devoted father and humble man.
Private-hire vehicle (PHV) driver Gavin Neo, 49, worked up to 15 hours a day — starting in the afternoon and continuing through the night until it was time to send his children to school in the morning.
He often told friends he worked tirelessly for his two children, a 17-year-old son and a 13-year-old daughter.
On May 29, Neo passed away after suffering a sudden cerebral stroke three days earlier.
Devoted father
Fellow PHV driver Bryan Ang shared on Facebook that Neo was deeply devoted to his children.
He recalled late-night suppers of S$3.80 chicken rice at a Killiney coffee shop — what they called the “cheapest food in town.”
When Ang once asked why Neo still skimped on food despite long hours on the road, Neo simply replied, “It’s for my kids and their future.”
Neo would usually finish the meal with a can of Red Bull before getting back behind the wheel.
He didn’t drink, smoke, or spend on himself.
“Gavin was a humble and down to earth guy, that always shares his experience with his peers and newer drivers in the same trade” Ang said.
Crowdfunding effort
Fellow drivers have since launched a crowdfunding campaign, with donations accepted via PayNow to Neo’s sister.
Neo’s sister told Shin Min Daily News that the family is struggling to come to terms with his sudden death.
She expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support but asked for space for the family during this difficult time.
She also mentioned that Neo’s daughter is currently abroad with her mother and has not yet returned for the funeral.
The funeral was held on May 31, and Neo was cremated at Mandai Crematorium.
