After dining at a restaurant in Malaysia, a woman and her husband paid RM50 (S$15) for their RM48.25 meal.

But instead of getting back RM1.75 in change, they were handed RM0.70 and two candies.

The cashier explained that they didn't have enough change for the remaining RM1.05, reported Sin Chew Daily.

When her husband asked why, he was told that one piece of candy was worth RM0.50, and that two candies equalled RM1.

"If that's how they calculated it, why didn't they give us the remaining RM0.05?" she asked in a social media post.

Unhappy at the arrangement, the woman said she and her husband devised a plan.

They planned to order another drink before leaving, and use the candies to pay.

But when they tried to do so, the cashier told them that the drink was on the house, she said.

Responses

The social media post sparked debate in the comments section.

People said that they would not accept the candy as change, and that restaurants frequently give out candies for free.

"If I encountered such a thing, I would bring the same two candies the next time I went to pay the bill," one person remarked.

Another said: "It's not the customer's problem if the restaurant doesn't have change."
