A 66-year-old man was sentenced on Jun. 3 to seven weeks' jail for molesting a 72-year-old woman on at least four occasions in a coffee shop in Singapore.

He touched her buttocks, hands and back.

Zheng Sangtai (transliteration), faced four charges of outrage of modesty, Shin Min Daily News reported.

The prosecution proceeded with one charge, with the others taken into consideration during sentencing.

To protect the victim, the judge ordered a gag order on any information, including the address of the incident, which could lead to the identification of the victim, who was a cleaner at the coffee shop.

What happened

The man started to patronise the coffee shop where the incident occurred earlier in 2025, and the victim happened to work there.

The man molested the victim for the first time on one morning in March, when he pinched her buttocks.

Got more daring

His actions then got more daring as he molested the victim another three times in April.

He pinched the victim's buttocks on one morning in early April.

He also touched her left arm and back on the morning of Apr. 11.

The victim was shocked when she was molested.

When she could not bear being molested again, she questioned the man and called the police.

Repeat offender

The man was previously convicted and sentenced to nine weeks' jail in 2004 for assault and indecent exposure.

The prosecution argued that the man was a repeat offender and that he sexually exploited the victim to a certain extent.

Although there was no evidence that the victim suffered mental trauma, she was frightened after being molested, the prosecution said.

The prosecution sought a deterrent sentence and requested for seven weeks' jail.

The man, who was not represented by a lawyer, said through an interpreter that he was just joking with the victim, and that she was a senior citizen in her 60s or 70s, and that he was unlucky to get caught.

The prosecution countered that the victim was angry about the man's behaviour and that he should not make such a joke.

The judge also warned the man not to touch the victim or other women after he is released from prison.
