Fernvale death: Man, 44, charged with murder of woman, 79, believed to be his mother

A 44-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a 79-year-old woman in Sengkang.

Lim Yuen Li is accused of killing Wang How Khiew in a flat at Block 465B Fernvale Road between 2am and 10.30am on Jun. 1.

The woman is believed to be his mother and they were reportedly living together, according to The Straits Times.

Murder is an offence that carries the death penalty.

Want to attend funeral

Lim appeared in person at his first court session on Jun. 3.

He asked if he could attend the funeral of the "deceased", without calling her by name or referring to her as his mother.

He also requested to use his mobile phone to make calls and said he wanted to apply for a state-appointed lawyer.

At the prosecution’s request, the court ordered Lim to be remanded for a psychiatric assessment.

Lim will return to court on Jun. 24.

Woman found lying motionless inside unit

In a Jun. 2 news release, the Singapore Police Force said they received a call for assistance regarding the incident at around 11.48am on Sunday.

Upon the police's arrival, officers found the woman lying motionless inside the unit.

She was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene by Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) paramedics.

The man was arrested at the scene.

Preliminary investigations revealed that both parties were known to each other.

Police investigations are ongoing.
