Fire breaks out at BMTC bunk in Pulau Tekong, no reported injuries
The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) is working with the SCDF to investigate the cause of the fire.
A fire broke out in the afternoon of Jun. 20 at a bunk of an unoccupied accommodation block at Pulau Tekong, which was promptly extinguished by nearby staff.
The Ministry of Defence (Mindef) confirmed with Mothership that a fire broke out at the Basic Military Training Centre (BMTC) at around 1:50pm.
No BMTC staff or trainees were injured.
A video showed what appeared to be the fire's aftermath
A TikTok video posted on Jun. 20 showed what appeared to be thick black fumes in the room in the aftermath of the fire.
Bunk mattresses were tilted sideways in the video as someone in army uniform continued to spray the room with a water hose.
"Tekong Viper coy bunk burn down," the caption read.
It is unclear what started the fire.
Fire was promptly extinguished by BMTC staff
Mindef told Mothership that the fire alarm was triggered at 1:51pm, and the fire was promptly extinguished by BMTC staff who had heard the fire alarm and spotted the smoke.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was also called to the scene.
The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) is working with the SCDF to investigate the cause of the fire.
"The SAF remains committed to upholding high standards of fire safety to ensure a safe environment for our service personnel," Mindef said, adding they are unable to provide further comments at this juncture as investigations are ongoing.
In January 2024, 13 people were evacuated after a fire, involving a generator, occurred at an offshore fish farm near Pulau Tekong, according to The Straits Times.
There were no reported injuries.
