Singaporean food critic Chua Lam, based in Hong Kong, died on Jun. 25 at the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital.

According to Chua's Facebook post on Jun. 27, he passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends.

The post also detailed that, following Chua's wishes, there was no funeral, and the body was cremated.

Legacy

Chua was born in Singapore in 1941 and was a renowned columnist and food critic.

He also loved film, which led him to study it in Japan, reported South China Morning Post.

He moved to Hong Kong in 1963 and went on to produce several movies, including Jackie Chan films, such as "Mr Nice Guy", "Armour of God", and "Wheels on Meals".

Chua has written numerous books and restaurant guides on Hong Kong

In recent years, he organised special culinary tours around Asia and the world.

According to SCMP, these tours would often involve sampling dishes from four to five restaurants a day to identify and recommend the best local specialty food.

In 2023, Chua's wife took a fall, and when he was trying to help her up, he suffered a severe hip injury that required surgery.

His wife subsequently died while he was recovering from the surgery, added SCMP.

In 2008, Chua shared that death was not taboo for him, and it was inevitable.

He also said he would like his ashes to be scattered in Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong.
