A Brazilian tourist, 27, who plunged 600m down a slope of an active volcano in Indonesia, has died four days after becoming stranded alone.

The body of Juliana Marins was discovered beside a crater on Jun. 24 by rescuers who used a thermal drone for the search.

The intensive search was complicated by extremely harsh terrain and weather.

Her family in Brazil have since claimed that the ropes used to reach her were too short.

What happened

Marins was hiking with five friends on Mount Rinjani on Jun. 21 when she slipped and fell off a cliff on the side of the 3,726m mountain, according to Indonesian authorities.

The active volcano is a popular tourist site located on the Indonesian island of Lombok, in West Nusa Tenggara province.

“After four days of work, hindered by adverse weather, terrain and visibility conditions in the region, teams from Indonesia’s Search and Rescue Agency found the body of the Brazilian tourist,” Brazil’s government said in a statement.

Reuters reported that Marins fell off a cliff on the mountain, but not into the volcano crater, quoting the head of local rescuers Muhammad Hariyadi.

A spokesman for the East Lombok Police told local media that Marins had experienced fatigue and the guide at that time advised her to rest.

"Then the five guests in the tour group were taken by the guide to continue the journey," he said.

He added: “However, by the time he returned to fetch her, the Brazilian woman was already missing.”

She was spotted over the weekend by passing tourists who heard her screams for help.

Marins was unable to climb back up the slopes after suffering injuries.

She also had no food, water or access to shelter.

Difficult to reach her

There were claims on social media that the woman was abandoned by her guide, but major news outlets did not report on this as the claims appeared speculative or unconfirmed.

It was reported that the soft sand in the area made it difficult to retrieve Marins using ropes.

The head of the local rescuers added that Marins was spotted at a dept of 150m on Jun. 21, but she slipped farther on the sandy terrain of the cliff face.

She had apparently slipped to 500m by Jun. 23 morning.

CNN reported that she fell 600m, citing Indonesian authorities.

Drone footage of Marins showed her still alive initially but injured, and cowering in a rocky ravine.

She had fallen about 300m by that time.

A total of 50 people were involved in her rescue.

Indonesia forestry minister Raja Juli Antoni said in a statement that the Mount Rinjani hiking track would be closed out of respect to Marins and her family and to ease the evacuation effort.

Family appealed for help

The young woman from Rio de Janeiro worked as a publicist and pole dancer.

Marins’ family was urgently appealing for additional support when the rescue efforts were being carried out.

An Instagram account dedicated to her rescue got over one million followers in 24 hours.

It has 1.6 million followers now.

In a post to the page, the family expressed their frustration with the pace of the rescue.

They said: “A whole day and they advanced only 250 meters below, there were 350 meters left to reach Juliana, and they retreated.”

“We need help, we need the rescue to reach Juliana urgently!”
