WhatsappA 34-year-old Chinese national was charged in court on May 9 after he allegedly offered S$50 each to two Certis Cisco auxiliary police officers (APOs).

The accused, Huang Binghao, was a tourist in Singapore when he committed the alleged offences, according to a press release issued by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB).

Huang allegedly offered the bribes to the APOs, who were attached to the National Environment Agency (NEA), on separate occasions on Apr. 10.

He did so purportedly to get them to refrain from taking enforcement action against him for smoking in a non-designated smoking area in Orchard.

Charged with corruption

According to CPIB, Huang purportedly smoked in a non-designated smoking area outside the vicinity of Tang Plaza along Orchard Road on Apr. 10.

The two APOs rejected Huang's alleged bribe, and his case was subsequently referred to CPIB.

For his alleged offences, Huang faced two charges for violating the Prevention of Corruption Act.

If convicted of corruption, Huang could be fined up to S$100,000, jailed for up to five years, or both.

CPIB emphasised that Singapore adopts "a strict zero-tolerance approach towards corruption".

Those who wish to submit corruption-related complaints and reports can do so on CPIB's website.

Alternatively, they can call the duty officer at 1800-376-0000 or email CPIB at [email protected].
