Police investigating 5 men, aged 58-75, for gambling at Aljunied Crescent void deck

The police are investigating five men, aged between 58 and 75, for their suspected involvement in illegal public gaming.

Officers from Bedok Police Division conducted enforcement operations in the vicinity of Aljunied Crescent on May 7.

Gambling paraphernalia and S$229 in cash were seized as case exhibits, the police said on May 9.

Investigations against the five persons are ongoing.

Caused disamenities on ground floor

Photos of the incident showed playing cards on a chess table located at the void deck of a public housing block.

Shin Min Daily News reported that people were seen congregated at the void deck over the past two years.

The group would gather there in the afternoon till about 10pm daily.

The situation got worse over the past six months, especially on days when there were horse racing events to bet on.

The group would also allegedly urinate at the surrounding areas on the ground floor, causing inconveniences to residents.

Trash and leftover food would also be left behind.

The police apparently caught the men red-handed when they were playing poker.

Under the Gambling Control Act 2022, any person who gambles with another person from any place in Singapore shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding S$10,000, or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or both.

The police said they take a serious stance against any person involved in illegal gambling activities and offenders will be dealt with sternly in accordance with the law.

Members of the public can contact the National Council on Problem Gambling at 1800-6-668-668 if they wish to seek help for gambling addiction.
