Defence minister Ng Eng Hen not running in GE2025, after 24 years in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC
"It's been an honour and privilege to serve my residents and Singaporeans at large," he said.
Minister for Defence Ng Eng Hen is stepping down from Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC after serving as the constituency's MP for 24 years.
Speaking to the media at the People's Action Party's (PAP) introduction of candidates for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, Ng addressed his constituency residents directly:
"You have elected me to serve five terms as a Member of Parliament, and also more than 20 years as a minister in government. It's been an honour and privilege to serve my residents and Singaporeans at large."
Explaining that leadership succession is a "cardinal strength and virtue" of the PAP, Ng said that the time has come for him to make way for new candidates, just as his predecessors had made way for him back in 2001.
"I had informed Prime Minister Wong some time back that it was time for me to continue that virtuous tradition, make room for renewal and regeneration of the PAP slate. I will not be contesting the next General Election."
"I want to thank Bishan-Toa Payoh and Marymount residents for their trust and faith in me after nearly 24 years as a member of Parliament," he said.
"We have become good friends and grown older together. I've watched your children receive awards each year and grow up, and shared your joy when grandchildren arrived. In some families, I have given awards both to the parent and the child."
In particular, Ng thanked his grassroots volunteers, praising them for being hardworking and committed.
"They serve with their hearts and are the reason why Singapore enjoys harmony and peace."
